〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Faith Connors
CHARACTER AGE: 22
SERIES: Mirror's Edge Catalyst
CHRONOLOGY: After Noah is captured by KrugerSec
CLASS: Anti-Hero (Unsettled)
HOUSING: Random please!
BACKGROUND: Mirror's Edge Catalyst is a full reboot of the original Mirror's Edge game (not a sequel - many of the characters have different backstories), following the story of Faith Connors in her profession as a Runner. Runners are experts at parkour, stegophily, and close quarters combat, and often serve as couriers, informants, and thieves across Cascadia. More information on the canon setting can be found HERE and background on Faith is HERE. Some supplemental information is taken from "Mirror's Edge: Exordium", the 6-issue comic series called that was published as a prologue to the game's events.
PERSONALITY: (Contains major spoilers for the whole ME:C game.)
"There's a moment on the arch of a jump, when you are neither rising nor falling.
All you can see is the sky. All you can feel is the air and all you can hear is your heartbeat.
That is all you are. Muscle and motion. It's called the deadpoint. I live for that."
As a Runner, Faith is a natural daredevil and risk taker... kind of a requirement when your job entails jumping off buildings and dodging the Conglomerate's private militia. Despite the inherent dangers -- or, in some cases, because of them -- Faith took to the Runner lifestyle early and often to the reluctance of Noah Kekai, her adoptive guardian and the head of his own Runner cabal. She's highly competitive, both as a member of Noah's cabal and for her own ego. She has a friendly rivalry with Celeste, a member of a competing Runner faction, and even with Icarus, a colleague in her same group who rose to a prominent position with the cabal after Faith was imprisoned. Faith chooses to be a Runner not for the rewards (either prestige among her peers, or for money "scrip"), but because she loves finding new ways to challenge herself.
But this ruthless pursuit of winning has an ugly side too, and it shows when during an inter-cabal race against Celeste and a fellow member Caleb. When Caleb slips and nearly falls, Faith continues on to win the race while Celeste stays to help him, saving his life. Noah berates Faith viciously for this, scolding her that they take care of their own. While Faith's instincts are not malicious or uncaring, she can easily lose herself in her passions.
She can be reckless at times, a trait that Noah both recognizes as her experience, but also her headstrong nature. Having been a close friend to both her parents, Noah took Faith in after they and her sister will killed during the November Riots, raising her as an adopted daughter. However, he was wary to send her on more dangerous missions, even after Faith both asked and proved she was capable of handling them with her skills (albeit not always her temper). This led to a growing rift between Faith and Noah, where she both cared deeply for him as a father figure, but resented the fact that he didn't trust her enough to be treated like a real Runner in his crew. Faith can also be incredibly hard on herself, pushing herself to be a better Runner by being faster, stronger, and more agile.
"I was too young to remember exactly how it started. The authorities said the changes were for the greater good. But good isn't the same as right."
While Faith has memories from prior to that day, she considers it the shaping point of her early life. Her entire family was taken from her in one fell swoop, and for reasons she couldn't really grasp at that age. This instilled in her a fierce distrust of due process and of KrugerSec, and cemented in her mind that the Conglomerate cannot be trusted. Faith has never gotten over losing them, and that reflects a lot in how she treats other people: wary of getting close to them, of opening up. Even those who are her friends note that she rarely treats them as anything more than colleagues.
A prime example of Faith's recklessness comes into play during the events of Mirror's Edge: Exordium, when she takes a job for Dogen, head of the city's most influential crime syndicates. While escaping some "blues" (KrugerSec patrols), Faith interrupts a meeting between Dogen and some clients, only to see one of her mother's drawings framed on his wall. This begins a series of off-book jobs as she tries to earn enough scrip to buy it from him, despite Dogen telling her it's impossible to afford: another example of Faith's never-back-down resilience. However, Dogen's increasingly shady and cutthroat tactics worry Noah and he fears for Faith's life, which furthering the rift between them.
"Merc: Sometimes I wonder if you just encourage trouble, like by running DELIBERATELY into the blues.
Faith: Maybe, it's cute the way they try to catch me."
Despite knowing the role that the corporations of the Conglomerate played in the death of her family -- and that of many others -- Faith maintained a contentious but ultimately low-key opposition of the Corps up until mid-way through the game's events. She challenged them more as a Runner than as someone with a vendetta, which seems odd considering how headstrong she can be. Most likely this is due to Noah's upbringing, as his instructions to his crew were to engage the Corps as little as possible, for their own safety. Despite the conflict between them, Faith clearly takes a strong moral center from his teaching.
By the same token, she never joins up with the resistance group called Black November, as their tactics ran more toward that of terrorism than protest, and many of their members had lost loved ones to the November Riots, including their leader Rebecca Thane. While Faith enjoys baiting the Corps, especially KrugerSec, she never actively intends them harm, only inconvenience and rebellion, until her hand is forced during the game events.
POWER:
Runner Vision (canon-ish?) - In Glass, like in all Cascadian cities, the omnipresent online data network is called The Grid. Runners use a hack software called The Beat, which auto-plots a line to their objective. (It's an OOC mechanic with an IC explanation, in the game.) In MoM, Faith will retain this ability as a stand-alone power, allowing her to mentally designate a location, person or objective and then follow the red trail to it. (A video of Runner's Vision in action.)
Gravity Bubble (porter) - Faith will be able to extend a bubble of ~20 feet around her, in which she can control the strength of gravity within the space. At first, she'll only be able to lighten gravity -- making things float, making herself lighter (and thus able to move along buildings in a more similar manner as her canon) but eventually and with practice, she'll learn how to increase gravity.

People who've been here for a while, especially ones who've gained-- who can now do stuff they couldn't do before?
[ It's too weird to says 'powers'. Or even 'extraordinary abilities'. ]
Is it pretty normal to not be able to [ control ] make them do what you're trying to do? With some breakable things shattering as a result?
[ and then in an undertone: ] We'd better not responsible for paying for those things....
Does the term "Grid Node" mean anything to anyone here?
